Three other dramatists in Guan Hanqing’s own time, Yang Xianzhi 楊顯之, Fei Junxiang 費君祥 and Liang Jinzhi 梁進之, were proclaimed in the LGB as an intimate friend, an old family friend and an acquaintance respectively of Guan Hanqing. Obviously Guan Hanqing’s celebrity from his zaju creations was acknowledged by such Yuan writers as Zhong Sicheng as early as 1330. Jia Zhongming, a playwright who lived well into the fifteenth century, revised the catalogue of the LGB in 1422. As mentioned above, Jia authorized a sequel to Zhong Sicheng’s register.

There is no surviving, original play script of Dou E yuan that can be attributed to Guan Hanqing. Thus we have no direct access to his authentic text. Indeed it is doubtful whether real, complete editions even existed in early Ming times. The actual content and themes of his play must be reconstructed from later versions. The early play scripts were most probably performance aids for the actors, rather than genuinely readable and literary works of drama. During the Ming era, the play scripts of Guan Hanqing’s zaju were collected by different book dealers or editors who normally collated and revised the texts of his play collections.
