The tomographic method with a thin laser sheet reveals the instantaneous shape of the cross section of the unburned mixture region. Figure 12 shows three examples of the image processed tomographic pictures taken at different instances. The experimental conditions are almost same as those of Fig. ll(b). As in the schlieren photographs. the boundaries between the unburned mixture jets and the recirculation zones are recognizable. It is seen that a tongue of the unburned mixture spreads into the burned gas region.

In the estimation of the turbulence Reynolds numbers and the Damkohler numbers, there is one problem, because the turbulence characteristics 34 vary significantly in space. We used in the estimation the values of u', L and A at the center plane and just in front of the turbulent flame zone . Therefore, all of the information pertain to order of magnitude estimates, not to uniquely defined, precise quantities. A typical value of R A ranges from 300 to 1300 and that of Da from 5 to 25.
