But what the trajectory of mapping I have described in this chapter has produced is a distinct form of whiteout that is more a blackout. Whiteout among its many connotations and uses tends to suggest a naturalized limit to human seeing, which is why its effects are most often linked to polar, extreme or aerial environments. Yet, whiteout describes not so much the extremity of geographical environment, but the extreme visual environment. Visual environments are remote, virtual, and disembodied. They are relations among bodies, places, and the mechanics of optics.
If Scott was once celebrated as the incarnation of everything a Englishman should be, he is now damned as the sad embodiment of everything he actually was. 4 The question of Scott’s radically changed legacy begs the answer that it is not Scott that has changed, but the times. While Scott once got a pass in a way for having used Antarctica, mere ice, as his backdrop, the very starkness and inutility of his arena continues to cause Antarctica as ice to fall away and brings into sharper focus the ideological significance of his endeavor.
Ernest Shackleton’s resurgence in the 1990s may have outpaced both Scott’s and Amundsen’s popularity. His complete divorce from history and utility of any kind—he is lauded only for not dying and interesting now for not being historical and for missing WWI, something that did not go over until WWI no longer rung even a nostalgic bell—makes his story the more complete fulfillment of the nineteenth-century ideal of pure, male suffering. Popular narratives of exploration, it seems, must be continually purged of their links to empire, of their repressed and even absent native cultures.
